Jennifer and I went canoeing in the Chain O Lakes State Park yesterday afternoon. To say I was a little nervous at the beginning is putting it mildly. It has been 35 years since I was in a canoe--and only for a few minutes back then. But, I wanted to press through the fear (also, I'm not that great of swimmer) and enjoy canoeing. The first twenty minutes or so, I was pretty nervous. Then, I was able to settle into the beauty of the experience. It was quite amazing.
We saw some great natural beauty while paddling including what we believe were sandhill cranes:
Towards the left side, you can see the second one hiding in the tall grass. These both were more out in the open water but they retreated to the tall grass as we attempted to move closer.
This was as close as we could get--Jen had a zoom working to the max. You just might be able to see the red on its head. It was stunningly beautiful and graceful. At this point I would say we where twenty five yards away or so.
Here is what Jen sees ahead of her:
The above is where Grass Lake and the Foz River meet. To rent a canoe at this park, was cheaper than going to a movie.
Below is a shot of patience paying off. We waited for a while and the hidden sandhill crane gradually moved towards the one out in the open. Sheila said I should make a caption about cross-gender friendship here.
It was a beautiful, amazing, canoe ride. We were able to soak in God's beauty and goodness.
